Site Inspection Guide Before Buying Self‑Propelled Scissor Lift

Before locking in your self-propelled scissor lift purchase, spend time completing a site inspection. It sounds simple, but mismatches between site conditions and machine specs are one of the top reasons buyers end up unhappy with their new scissor aerial work platform. You can collect all the data your supplier needs with basic measuring tools, photos and simple observation. This process works equally well whether you plan to buy an electric self-propelled scissor lift for indoor use or a rough terrain unit for outdoor construction.

First, map your access routes. Measure the narrowest doorway, corridor or elevator opening the lift must pass through. Record both width and height. Remember you are measuring the collapsed machine dimensions, not the platform height. Many buyers calculate working height carefully but forget the machine cannot get into the room where the work needs to happen. If access is tight, narrow-body compact models are the solution.

Next, check floor or ground conditions. For indoor locations, confirm floor load capacity. Larger self-propelled scissor lift has considerable dead weight, and raised floors, mezzanine decks or older warehouse slabs may have weight limits. Check floor flatness too. Standard electric models are designed for level hard floors; soft carpet, uneven tiles or damaged concrete create tipping hazards. If your site is outdoors, note ground type: gravel, mud, grass or compacted earth will point you toward rough terrain scissor aerial work platform.

Measure the overhead clearance. Even after you get the rated working height, check for overhead obstacles: steel beams, ventilation ducts, lighting trusses and overhead cranes. Leave a safe buffer space so the platform cannot collide with overhead structures when fully raised. Note the location of power lines nearby, as these create extra safety rules for elevated work.

Record typical operation patterns. Will one person work on the platform, or two? What tools and materials will they carry up? This tells you what load capacity you require. Are jobs completed in short bursts, or do crews run the lift for full 8-hour shifts? That helps decide between lead-acid and lithium battery options for your self-propelled scissor aerial work platform.

Take clear photos and short video clips of your site, narrow passages and overhead obstacles, then share them with your supplier. The right supplier will review your site details and flag risks you may have overlooked before production and shipment. We regularly help buyers review site data to avoid costly specification mistakes.
